FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Over 6000 pilots have completed an FAA Basic Medical Rule safety course but important questions remain unanswered. Medical questions about qualification and disqualification have flooded the free consultation hotline at Pilot Medical Solutions, which is located near the FAA in Oklahoma. Pilots, attorneys, Aviation Medical Examiners and even FAA employees are reaching out to the medical service group to answer technical questions which determine eligibility to fly 6-place aircraft weighing up to 6000 pounds.
While a private physician’s sign-off and a 30 minute quiz may deem some anxious airmen fit to fly, many “new rule” technical questions, traditionally addressed by the FAA’s Aeromedical Certification Division, are now being fielded by the pilot advocate group. Private physicians are struggling the most with these questions since it is ultimately up to them to interpret the FAA’s published disqualification verbiage and establish eligibility under the new law. Issues such as: “what is considered as a “satisfactory” explanation for a stroke?”, “what constitutes an established diagnosis of cardiovascular disease?” and “do I qualify for Class 3 medical certification?” are among the repeated questions”
It is imperative that pilots have ready answers to important flight fitness questions, not only for safety, but also to protect pilots and their physicians from liability. Airmen seeking basic-med answers have crowded leftseat.com, the flight fitness website, which already provides answers to thousands of inquiries each month. Executive Director David Hale said: “Pilots want to know that they are fit and it is important the pilots have timely realiable answers to these important questions”. Pilots with questions can call 405-787-0303 or visit www.leftseat.com.

More Gurus
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Pilot Medical Solutions, has announced it will hire more gurus. Pilot Medical Solutions has and will continue to employ physicians as needed yet the nation’s oldest aviation medicine company, which has been providing help for pilots continuously since 1994, has found that the majority of aviation medical cases are approved by the FAA faster when aeromedical guru’s are in charge.
When the FAA’s Chief of Medical Certification retired, Pilot Medical Solutions hired him to provide aeromedical summaries for complex cases, but Pilot Medical Solutions Guru, Amanda Scruggs, says most cases succeed due to the work of document managers or Gurus, who are intimately familiar with the FAA requirements and tirelessly compile flight-fitness packets.
Gurus hired by Pilot Medical Solutions must have extensive knowledge of FAA medical criteria, experience managing government paperwork, and they must tenaciously manage the process to assure pilots with jeopardized medical issues receive FAA approval quickly.
““Our job is to assure the livelihood of pilots through timely document management.” Scruggs said, “What pilots need is someone who knows what the FAA expects and is willing to spend several hours calling, faxing, sending and reading emails, pouring over complex paperwork, working with the pilots’ personal physician to explain essential phraseology and assuring compliance with constantly changing FAA requirements. This is a labor intensive, heavily bureaucratic process which is usually counter-intuitive to doctors.”
Pilot Medical Solutions gurus are managing clients who themselves are physicians. One more indication that medical gurus are well suited to help pilots obtain FAA waivers.

In 1997 the FAA received over 100,000 calls and more than six-thousand pilots were authorized for Special Issuance medical waivers.Special Issuance has doubled since 1990 andone can only guess how many pilots lose hope each year, exhausted from phone calls to the FAA and medical offices, not to mention having to organize all the technical documentation essential for Special Issuance approval.

Each Special Issuance case requires records from laboratories, hospitals, surgeons, specialists, and a personal physician. Pilot Medical Solutions is the first pilot advocate organization exclusively dedicated to pilot medical support and has provided confidential medical management for pilots with jeopardized medicals since 1996. Since that time they have amassed a 97% success rate with Special Issuance clients. Their proven system retrieves, reviews, organizes, and submits pilot records to expedite FAA medical issuance.

Today Pilot Medical Solutions brings a new program to pilots. While AME’s are required to forward derogatory airman data to the FAA, the Medical Protection Program provides confidential preventive medical management. This program virtually eliminates premature applications which often post negative information in pilot files. “Every pilot who wants to stay in the left seat must be constantly exposed to the uncertainties of aviation medical exams. This program eliminates the uncertainty,” says David Hale, Director of Pilot Medical Solutions.

“The solution” says Hale “is to work with pilots and their personal physicians and prequalify pilots before they apply for medical certificates.”
Pilots who do not pass the prequalification test are given goals outlining requirements for success. Most will qualify by finding a medication the FAA will approve or by making lifestyle changes; such as compliance with an exercise or nutrition prescription provided by Pilot Medical Solutions.

The Medical Protection Program will give pilots assurance before each medical application. In addition, valuable time once lost to deferred or denied medical applications will be minimized rather than commonplace.
